Are Books Better Than TV?

by Catharine Bowmanupdated on July 31, 2019February 28, 2019

There are many forms of entertainment. Among the most popular are reading books and watching television. However, the general perception of reading and watching shows a huge difference. Let’s take a look further on where the difference lies.

Much like candies resulting in cavities, the general perception of reading books is in line with learning and it’s good for anyone. Reading books or simply reading from Kindle (Read Kindle reviews from Good Guy Gale https://goodguygale.com/kdspy-review-detailed-look/)  increase knowledge and stimulate the brain because it makes one think.

People think books are good and that TV is bad. When you spend a whole day curling up with a book, you create an intellectual perception. But if you take a day to watch TV, you create a “couch potato” perception.

So why is watching TV perceived differently as to reading books? For instance, is watching “Game of Thrones” tend to lower one’s intelligence? Is reading a book by Dan Brown makes one more intelligent? But also, there’s the fact that not all books are good. Some books had been written poorly and lack supporting facts and resources.

Books vs TV According To Science

Research had been conducted in Japan at Tohoku University observing 276 children while recording the time they spend watching TV and its associated long term impacts.

Results show that the longer time they spend watching television, the lower the results of their verbal test. The negative results have been shown regardless of gender, age, and social status.

Another study was conducted in 2013 – How reading a novel makes an impact on the brain. Chosen college students were requested to read the novel, Pompeii by Robert Harriss. The novel had been specifically chosen because of its dramatic plot and strong narration which is based on real occurrences.

The result shows that students who have read the novel heightened the level of connectivity in areas of the brain that connects to language. It had also been noted that there’s an increase in the sensory motor region of the brain. This suggests that those who read novels experience the same sensations that the characters in the book had.

Television as a form of entertainment is passive. Immediately after turning on to the TV show you prefer, you may simply relax and watch almost everything occur with no further exertion. You don’t stop to think about what is occurring.

Television likewise gives concepts and personas on just the surface. It doesn’t have the luxury of conveying or detailing circumstances in detail, given that they have to keep audiences aesthetically entertained. Programs on television are fast moving to keep people from changing their channels. TV results in lower communications and poor reason.

Bottom Line

Reading looks very good when compared with watching television. Science has proven that reading calms the nerves, boosts language and reasoning skills, and can keep anyone mentally alert even with age. TV, alternatively, provides a reverse impact. So to answer our question title, yes books are better than television to many degrees.
